Buying checklist

Responsible Buying

A practical checklist for evaluating alpaca apparel, toys, decorative objects, and sourcing claims before paying premium prices.

Before you buy

The most responsible purchase is usually the one that is fully understood. That means knowing what the product is, what it is made from, how it should be cared for, and whether any ethical claim is backed by named evidence.

For apparel

  • What is the exact fiber content?
  • Is the item knit, woven, lined, brushed, or blended in a way that affects use or care?
  • What care method governs the finished garment?
  • Is a standard or traceability claim actually explained?

For stuffed animals and decorative figures

  • Is it a toy or décor?
  • What is the outer material: plush, felt, yarn, or hide?
  • Is there age guidance, if relevant?
  • Are there detachable parts or fragile details?
  • Does the cleaning advice make sense for the material and intended use?

Red flags

  • Premium pricing with no nearby fiber-percentage disclosure
  • “Baby alpaca” used as if it solves every quality question
  • Cute toy positioning with no age or safety information
  • Strong ethical language with no named standard, audit, or traceability explanation
